I think it's known not to work with child shells (or at least isn't guaranteed to work). In my case, the solution is good enough as is.

Uh, right, yes, that would work. Although I'm still curious as to whether apt-get itself provides a mechanism to achieve this.

I thought it was obvious that I wanted the output log e-mails to go someplace other than the owner of the crontab in question.
