I work as a Geophysicist in the Oil & Gas Industry. My specialty is data manipulation and problem solving, specifically solving data problems between software solutions.
Most companies use several different software, as each software usually has some functionality that does better than other software. With that variability comes the problem of data exchange between them. In most cases, the manipulation is complex, usually requiring columnar editing & individual column formatting.
I frequently find myself using Notepad++ or Cream over Excel. They are multi-purpose in that I can write sql scripts, convert commas to Tabs & the like. I bumped into each of these programs when looking for an affordable editing program that could column edit & handle a TXT file size of nearly 1 GB with out reformatting the data in the file. Excel will frequently reformat a 14 digit number to appear as 1.0e14 when the value needs to remain 100000000000000 because the 14 digit number is the object identifier.
I bumped into SuperUser.com because I couldn't figure out how to convert a comma to a Tab (or multiple Tabs). I did a Google search and found the answer here in about 2 minutes. The answers are up front and efficient with out a lot of extraneous babble noise.
