comment Markdown Live Preview Editor?
you do not have to set your file type to html. if you use the markdown bundle, you just need to remove the key equivalent activation of preview in the bundle settings. then textmate's show web preview in the window menu will give you a live preview.

i dunno if version control is the best way to track revisions to your preferences. i'd just use time machine or crashplan.

comment OS X cannot get IP from DHCP: how to verify
do you have different dns settings on the mac? for some wifi networks, you need to use the default dns settings (no google dns, opendns, etc) before they give you an actual ip.

comment Upgrading Mac OS X 10.5.8 Corrupted Lightroom 2.7
agreed, but for the average user, snow leopard works. if tedd is unsure, i think it's still prudent to go up to 10.5.8 and solve the problem there...

comment Ubuntu 10.10 - disaster - what other linux for beginner?
probably because you gave a lot of rambling and unnecessary context. if your question is 'what distro should i use', then that is a common question on superuser.com -- try searching. if your question is about how to install ubuntu, try askubuntu.com.

comment Hard drive misbehaving, SMART and manufacturer diagnostics pass. Should I replace it?
Report from a SMART study at Google conducted on predicting drive failures notes "Given the lack of occurrence of predictive SMART signals on a large fraction of failed drives, it is unlikely that an accurate predictive failure model can be built based on these signals alone." static.googleusercontent.com/external_content/untrusted_dlcp/…

comment OS X borked; need to backup outside of Time Machine
agreed that with super duper and a failing drive, it's not clear that data you get isn't corrupt. i'd open up your pictures to make sure they are actually there. given the failing drive, i would copy it with something more robust to bad sectors. superuser.com/questions/90799/… is a good start. finally, the more you mess with the drive, the more damage you may cause. if the data is really important, call drive savers.

sorry about that. i read pdf/x in the title and didn't read the rest carefully. understood that you don't want to purchase acrobat, but there is a 30 day trial if this pdf issue is urgent.

comment Linux binary support under Mac OS X?
depending on how cpu intensive arelquin is a vm might not be ideal. you might want to consider having an external linux box that you ssh or remote desktop into.
