So I am assuming the question you have is how can you restore those program shortcuts and settings? If so I believe it would be easier to just re-install the applications. Or, you could start using portable versions of those apps whenever possible so that you won't need to re-install most of them whenever you need to format.

Oh and a small piece of advice: during that time you are away don't forget that the computer will accumulate dust. Specially since it is a netbook, and a netbook that is working 24/7, you should definitely clean it after some time.
