I recently graduated from Vassar College, and am now a programmer at iVantage Health Analytics. I like all sorts of programming, and right now I'm interested in web development.

comment How do you reuse a visual mode selection?
Yeah, the line numbers thing was dumb -- I just used it as an example for how to create a selection macro. Using a range of marks is an interesting idea though...

This is a really powerful pattern! I wish I knew about that pipe command before.

comment How to set up a dev environment in a VDI
Thanks for the useful reply. Yeah, I personally don't love the idea but our org's IT team is tiny so we probably can't handle it ourselves. Here's hoping it works it well and space isn't a problem. Sorry for not being clearer in my original wording.

Made it more coherent and less ranty, tried to keep meaning the same.

comment How to set up a dev environment in a VDI
I am a developer; I wrote the question quickly and could have worded it better (will edit now). We're moving to a VDI because they say it is more secure and controlled. Our company handles sensitive data which we're legally required to protect, watch and audit; luckily that's not my job.

comment Downgrade from IE9 to IE8 on Windows 7
You may need to manually add IE8 afterwards if it wasn't already on, in which case go into the "Turn Windows features on or off" section of Programs and Features and click the box next to IE8. My complete steps: "turn off" ie9, "uninstall" IE9 update, then "turn on" ie8.

comment Slow saving changes to host file?
Well, all of a sudden saves are fast again (checked before I added the file to the exclusions list). Unfortunately am not sure how to reproduce the scenario, but if it starts happening again I will immediately try excluding the file and test this hypothesis. I have a hunch you're right though but the scanner is done working or something.

Interesting--I didn't consider that. We did just make some changes to our virus scanner. I'll have to look into it.

comment How to enable different ACPI Sleep Modes with Asus UEFI BIOS
Psu. They do go off sometimes though during sleep. I wonder if certain apps tell the os to not go into a deeper sleep sometimes.

According to the article the power savings are minimal, and then you have to wait for a full boot. Also, I want to avoid as much thermal shock as possible but long sleeps might have the same effect...

comment Trying to run Debian from USB on old Dell
Thanks for the answers all. I've concluded that this particular computer is unsalvageable save for some of the parts. I appreciate the feedback though. Saving question for posterity.
