comment Can I use Sysinternals Process Monitor to monitor a specific registry value?
You're right. Make it an answer and I'll accept.

comment How start PowerShell from cmd by specific path
If you must use the full path to powershell.exe, better to use %windir%.

comment How to disable iritating beeping sound in powershell
@STTR: Make that sc.exe, since sc in PowerShell is an alias for Set-Content. Read support.microsoft.com/kb/838671 for more details. Make this in to an answer.

comment Is there a way to supress any interactive prompts in a PowerShell script?
I think you should rename your question "How can I make Remove-Item fail fast?"

As an aside, a convenient abbreviation for -errorAction SilentlyContinue is -ea 0.

comment What is the putty on my heat sink?
Is this the right sort of thing? (amazon.com/Gino-202mm-Silicone-Thermal-Heatsink/dp/B008X0UKV8). Way more than I need...

comment What is the putty on my heat sink?
@Blender: I don't think so. I'm used to thermal paste being almost thin enough to flow (like this stuff: newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100017). What I see on the GPU and SB is thick like a putty.

I tried this but didn't have the same result as you. Can you provide more information?

comment How to find files that match certain criteria with PowerShell?
I reformatted your code so I didn't have a horizontal scroll bar. I hope that's OK with you. Also, the (parens) around the Get-ChildItem... pipeline are unnecessary.

So annoying: I wish apps would only write ERRORS to STDERR.

comment Making the Windows Terminal Usable
"make ... usable" isn't really a question, and "usable" is highly subjective. We have been using the Windows console for decades! Please focus specifically on what you want to see.

You may want to combine this trick with a polyglot trick in a .CMD file. See stackoverflow.com/a/8597794/5314

comment How it happens that Powershell executed with “run” and with pinned icon has different settings?
@EyeofHell: Did you look at the shortcut? I checked mine and confirmed that the white/blue color scheme is set there, not in the registry. I am editing my answer to make that more clear.

This is arcane stuff. I am sure I have missed some details. Hope others can help me out!

comment A disk is stuck in my slot-loading Dell Studio Hybrid. How can I get it out?
I replaced my DVD drive with a new slot-loader, but it never worked as well as new. In the end I bought an external USB DVD drive and used that instead.

comment PowerShell: history enhancements (readline)?
the console is the windows console subsystem, which is also used by cmd and any other console application. It has a lot of weird stuff, like streams and command editing and strange selection and TAB completion. Powershell ISE v3 is very good, but doesn't work well with "legacy" console apps. Cmdlets are great in the ISE.

comment Creating a folder named after the current date and time
While (Get-Date).ToString(...) works, Get-Date -Format ... is more idiomatic PowerShell.
