@ZaSter ha!.. this is what you get if you read man pages instead. You can make you last comment an answer. That precisely answers the question! Thanks.

@ZaSter it only fails to connect to a repository it doesn't need anyway. But nevermind, I just edited the /etc/yum.repos.d/nodejs-stable.repo to disable it for the time being and I could download the dependencies I needed. Still, out of curiosity, would like to know it it would be possible to just skip the missing repos instead of failing.

sorry, that seems like a confusion... I don't want to download Emacs from Fedora repositories. I have my own patches / I'm using version 24.2.50 (and I need it because of some libraries completely broken in 24.1.X. Or are you saying there' no other way but to first install the old version, then overwrite it with the new one?

comment Why did I fail to install packages when using debian?
Also, you definitely have installed from sid, but now are trying to install kerberos from squeeze - not such a great idea I'd say.

see if this infro can help you: packages.debian.org/sid/krb5-multidev it says it is known to conflict with heimdal-dev. While it says it can be installed alongside, I'd be suspicious about that, perhaps, if you have that installed, I'd uninstall, install kerberos and then reinstall heimdal.

Also, "unable to get lock" may mean couple of things: you are running apt-get from another terminal, and it didn't finish yet. You have something else interfere with installation process. You have no permission to do that (must be root). You could accidentally damage the package list by cancelling in the middle of install. Try dpkg with, iirc -f to do a sanity check on packages you have. (look at man dpkg first, I might had it wrong).

You could also try aptitude instead of apt-get. Not really to install, but, perhaps, it would give you a better error message / more clues to what exactly happened. (aptitude usually tries harder to find a way to install stuff, so you'll see a huge list of things it would install and remove in order to get it to work - that would give you an idea what you have in conflict with what you are trying to install).

comment 2 bootloaders to load same OSes?
Thanks for reply, it was slightly different in the end, on Fedora (and possibly other RH-like) and using grub2 it is grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg ; grub2-install /dev/sda
