comment Windows license for instance run both on HW and in VM?
Ah, that's what I feared, I have to upgrade myself to a multi-million-dollar company first, then I can use my computer the way I'd like. Well, well, I already knew that licenses tend to suck. Thanks for helping me find this out.

comment How does Windows 7 licensing work for running the OS as Virtual Machines?
Sure you can, and I am! On an earlier system I had no issues with reactivation due to running it both on HW and in VM. It happily booted in either way and didn't need reactivitation. The system I have now though is complaining about it not being genuine when run in the VM. It is a philosophical question, "what is a machine?" Do you happen to know what license I would need?

Yes, I know that! What I'm asking about is running THE SAME copy both on HW and in VM, i.e. there is ever only a single installation. At boot I choose between booting into my single-windows-installation or into Linux. If I boot to Linux I can start a VirtualBox VM running my single-windows-installation.

What if one would like to run the same copy both directly on the computer and in a VM?

comment Run commands when attaching to a specific network (NetworkManager?)
One of the comments (askubuntu.com/questions/13963/…) hints at the answer: in order to not have the UUID change on each reboot I had to configure the wired connection rather than rely on the transient, automatically created config.

Yeah that is interesting, I think I'll have to dig deeper into this. The one obvious thing that differs is that the network I'm connecting to is wired. I don't know if that is what causes the UUID to change each time.

comment Gzipped file arrives unzipped
I've now done an strace of curl -O, and there seems to be nothing on the client machine doing the un-gzipping, i.e. the output of strace doesn't contain any mention of 'zip'. The same is true when using ltrace. I'm leaning towards the network doing something strange, would that be possible?

I've done all the downloading as root, and I have no aliases in root's config at all, so unfortunately that doesn't explain it.

comment Subversion: extracting diff+log and replaying
Thanks, that's very clear. The limitation around binary files is a bit troublesome since the developers setting up the project decided to check in quite a few binary files, i.e. configuration is performed in Excel. Also, are there no drawbacks to using patch over svn patch?

That won't work very well since we have a whole set of changes in "our SVN" that we want to bring over to "their SVN". The question is whether that can easily be done keeping the individual commits.
