I'm an applied mathematician & engineer, living & working just outside the London metro area.

Over the years and on both sides of the Atlantic, I've led a variety of quantitative & operational challenges across intelligent systems & software engineering, sonar, defense, environmental technology, robotics, and most recently the complex world of multi-channel retail.

The common thread that links passion, profession, and play is applying technology, good design, and quantitative modelling and simulation, to build better products, enable better decisions, and optimise performance.

I'm always experimenting and tinkering, so feel free to get in touch with ideas.

comment Notepad++ new line only inserting CR when opening empty file (0 byte text file created in Windows Explorer)
I've had the same thing happen to me in Notepad++ and it's been driving me up the wall suspecting a bug in Notepad++. Turns out I now suspect that I am inadvertently hitting either Ctrl+M (Mac EOL 0xD only) or Ctrl+J (Unix EOL 0xA only) as I'm typing. These seem to be default keyboard shortcuts for Notepad++ -- annoying! Currently trying to find out how / where to disable these (they're not in the usual Settings > Shortcuts menu.

Thanks for the response. Your quote about console buffers, NppExec and Npp_run got me looking into this again and testing what exactly NppExec's console buffers do with respect to i/o. Apparently, they do take both input and reflect output. So the simple python program print("Enter anything: ", end=""); response=input(); print(response) will work when called from within Npp_Exec's console using python $(FILE_NAME). This has led me to a solution that works -- see answer. So (+1) for partial response that motivated finding an actual solution! Thanks.

revised How can I make Total Commander show “size on disk”?
Made the text independent of looking at the screenshot -- i.e. drew the conclusion about cluster size in the text.
