comment Ubuntu/ Gnome : Open an application in a specific workspace
The OP said the browser goes on workspace four. If it needed to be possible to open browsers on other workspaces after the session startup script runs, the last command in that script could be sleep; pkill devilspie.

comment How do I copy file named starting with a dot?
And the example I give using -R should work just fine too. If you think it's wrong, please explain why.

That's only a problem if you use -r. Without -r, it will just skip the directories.

comment bash 4.2 autocd command default over directory
How about getting into the habit of always typing a slash at the end when you mean a directory? /tmp/ is still two characters shorter than cd /tmp, and it's unambiguous.

comment Monitor /sys partition for changes
FWIW, inotifywatch from inotify-tools seems to work fine to count changes on /proc/sys on my Linux 3.5.0 system.

comment Difference between .bashrc and .bash_profile
@Gilles I don't understand why you claim this. With .$HOME/.bashrc as Rich showed above, settings in .bashrc will be available in login shells, and thus the desktop environment as well. For example, on my Fedora system, gnome-session is started as -$SHELL -c gnome-session, so .profile is read.

comment script to convert ext4 filenames to ntfs
pathchk may help. It doesn't do the conversion, but should tell you if a file needs converting.

comment In ls, how can I remove bg color for sticky bit
You don't need g+s on the files, you need g+w on the files and g+ws on the directories.

You need LS_COLORS=, not LSCOLORS=. See man dircolors.

@Rafal Dowgird: Other than TCP and UDP, it could be SCTP. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stream_Control_Transmission_Protocol

comment How To Give Execute Permissions To Root User File In Ubuntu?
Your question was very unclear because it didn't include the $ prompt, which is what I assume you were referring to. I have added it.
