comment How can I confirm that the DNS server I'm using is Microsoft-based?
Thanks for the prompt feedback. I'd prefer not to use NMAP. If possible, I'd like to use the stock commands in Windows CL (windows server 2003/2008).

Thanks for the feedback. With regard to your questions... 1) Yes, I have both Symantec AV and Adaware running, I'll try disabling adaware and see if that helps. 2) I think I have enough RAM (4 GB). I usually only use the laptop for internet and email. 3) I'll check out resource monitor.

comment How can I check if specific applications are open prior to silently installing a program?
@TheElectricMuffin That might work although errors come up if it doesn't find the program.

@Amazed so if I were to take the raw MIME source and paste it into notepad++, the number of characters would roughly equate to the size? What about the empty space? like the spaces in a sentence?

@IngmarHupp Thanks for the suggestion but how would that tell me the size of data?

comment How can I determine why exactly UAC is blocking an app from running/installing?
Thanks. I'll check it out. What I'm noticing is that some workstations will have problems and others won't. Not sure why.

comment Can I use an old sempron stock heat sink with a Phenom II processor?
@Journeyman Geek I bought an OEM processor that didn't have a heat sink. Oh well. I got a coolermaster. Not worth the risk.

Thanks. Can you recommend an HDD-Stress-Test? Would I use the dd command in Linux?

interestingly enough, the date and time seemed accurate when powering up and checking the BIOS. I did notice that the BIOS now hangs on "Checking IDE devices...." which it didn't do before. I also ran a memory test and it passed without error. Any other suggestions?

@TomWij - I don't directly manage the user so I'm not sure what the administrative decision was. Most of their workstation was locked down so I presume it's indeed a group policy.
