@CharlesLindsay: I will try as many of those as possible when I go in tomorrow. Thanks.

The school here generally disallows unauthorized wireless equipment (and from what I understand, they periodically sweep to find such equipment, since I've heard of people getting notices to shutdown their wireless routers). So the range extender may not work. The WiFi router is about twenty feet from the machine; I can unplug it and plug it back in (though I probably shouldn't), but otherwise that's the extent of my access to the router.

OK, why is this being down voted? I'm new to SU, so I would very much appreciate feedback...

@JakeGould: 802.11n. If it's an "inconsistent protocol", why am I not seeing random disconnects with other devices? I am certain the issue lies with this computer: either the software or the hardware.

Sure...just buy and install more, assuming you can find that old RAM in stock.

comment Xcode 4.6.1 on Mac is very slow. It uses 500% CPU and 5G ram
Have you tried resetting Xcode with defaults delete com.apple.Xcode; rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Xcode? Make sure to back up the settings first.

comment How to use chmod to change a file's permission?
The 3rd and 4th columns are the user and group who own the file. The first file is owned by root:root and the second file by andy:dev. So, you want to change the owner of the first file to andy:dev: chown andy:dev file.class.php

It's a local machine, but it does have a network connection.
