comment Can a kernel that supports multi-core reduce cpu overhead, reduce cpu overheat
You said that all major operating systems can do this with task scheduling. So regardless of the application and with the increase in cpu load, a linux kernel is capable to use the other cores for processing, provided it is -686 release ? Secondly, even if only a single core is detected, if the cpu load avg is below .70 then -486 kernel is well enough I hope. Unless there is any other specific reason to enable the other cores.

comment What does `apt-get install linux-headers-generic` do
And also can there be a scenario where header files of a kernel is updated or patched after a release of a kernel to fix an issue ? And the issue just goes away when you run a apt-get install linux-headers-generic.

What is your graphic card, did you have any proprietary graphics driver installed? Have you tested your system how it works with default nouveau driver?

comment How to make changes to /etc/network/interfaces propagate without messing up the desktop environment
You seem to have a problem with your graphics drivers because the command you are trying will never affect anything other than bringing down/up your interface. It is the right command to do after changing your network settings. Check if your graphic card is configured with suitable drivers.

I wouldn't agree that installing windows driver is the best solution. Your device will perform at its best when the driver is developed for linux. It can be community developed or manufacturer made and it is just the matter of installing it. Can you post output of this command from terminal? sudo lspci -v | grep -i wireless and mention your laptop/PC model.

I took the liberty to edit your post by mentioning "Wifi connection" since you did not mention it anywhere other than in your tags.

comment How to determine the socket connection up time on Linux
This will in fact tell you how long the connection is up. I think only detailed logging will be able to tell how long the client was connected to the socket. This is definitely a lead.
