"target mode" normally refers to target disk mode as described in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Target_Disk_Mode as it's supported by all macs. That's why I added the "I assume" ;) For troubleshooting Target DISPLAY mode have a look at support.apple.com/en-us/HT204592 which clearly states that you can use EITHER a thunderbolt OR a miniDisplayPort-cable.

comment OSX: How can I clone a larger hard drive to a smaller one?
as CarbonCopyCloner is "just" a GUI to rsync you could take a look at rsync. CarbonCopyCloner though does a lot more than just rsync so In my eyes it's the easiest solution for your problem. on cloning it also takes care of your rescue disc etc.

comment OS X: Run script at Login screen with FileVault on
are you talking about login after boot? or do you mean the password right afterstarting the computer? As the later is requesting the password to unlock your filevaulted harddrive nothing on that harddrive can be executed before.

comment Mac OSX connected to an Active Directory domain is not mapping to the network drive over VPN. I suspect DNS, but the settings all look fine
Hamachi is said to explicitly NOT use the 10.x.y.z range (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamachi_%28software%29#Addressing)

I'd also uncheck contacts when you're afraid of syncing your contacts to iCloud.

Is the DMG located on a server volume or on your local hard drive? If it's on a server volume do you connect via smb or afp?

I'm assuming that you do have the access rights to change the file and that you have the file on a HFS+ formated drive. Can you change the icon of any othe file that lies right beneath the DMG?

Do you want to change the ICON of the DMG or the background-image for the window that opens when you open the DMG?

comment How do I enter a filepath to save a new file to using the OS X “save file” dialog?
@Tetsujin I can understand what he means as you can not set the file-extension and you have to hit return twice. But I don't see it as a bug either as it's a graphical way in a graphical UI. If you want to do it plainly with keyboard-solutions you might have to use a few more keys than in some other operating systems.....

comment How do I run a plist daemon on MAC OS 10.8.5 with the correct file permissions
As it is a folder it needs drwxrwxrwx. Otherwise no one is allowed to move into the folder and therefore can't create a file.
