Why, Microsoft? Just why?

You may still be able to make $USERPROFILE work. Try this: HOME=$(cd "$USERPROFILE" && pwd).

comment Display “My Documents”/“My Videos”/etc. without “My” prefix in Windows 7
I've seen the same behavior as Rob. I can change it, it lasts a little while, and then weeks or months or some period of time later, it comes bacl.

comment How do you set environment variables for a single command on Windows?
Another option is to launch a separate cmd process and set them there. E.g., cmd /C "set ENVVAR=abc && dir". Since it won't affect the parent process, it will be effectively "cleared" on exit.

comment How to enable Hyper-V on Windows 7?
"Can't install Hyper-V in win7" ... "you must use Win7 pro"... Those statements are contradictory. In spite of the fact that we understand, this is a low-quality answer. Even worse, most of the meet of setting it up on Windows 7 is buried in a link that leads to a 3rd link, instead of reproducing the useful information here. -1

comment What happens when laptops reach 100% charge?
Do you have a link to that Volt battery advice video? @Moab To do manually, yes. Aside from automatically detecting when to allow the battery to charge more for extended use, they can all be automated.

comment Why isn't it possible to name a folder “._.” in Windows 7?
Worth noting is that you stumbled across the "hack" for starting a file name with a . in Windows.

comment Limit Excel CPU Usage
@MonkeyZeus Usually, the affinity is not saved when a process exits. It only applies to the process currently running. It could be that HandBrake was spawning new processes itself or you started new ones.

comment Limit Excel CPU Usage
Note that for affinity, Windows considers each core a CPU as well. (So this would work if you have a dual or quad core.)

comment When I plug an Ethernet cable into my computer, is my computer directly connected to every server on the Internet?
Tangential: What are those mostly isolated white star things? (I can post another question if you think it's warranted.) Not the ones at the ends of trees, but the ones smack dab in the middle but with little connection to anything (or the one far left middle-bottom).
