comment ALSA does not detect all USB cards properly
Do you have four controlCx devices in /dev/snd/? When you run strace -e open aplay -l, do all four get opened?

comment ALSA: How to configure an (virtual) audio device for each channel?
AFAIK Mixxx does not show virtual device defined in .asoundrc.

The Dolby/DTS compression must be done in software.

Yes, but what software to use depends on the OS.

The end device cannot create more bits or samples than are actually contained in the (compressed) data sent to it. And these algorithms aren't specified for more.

S/PDIF was designed for stereo data, so 5.1 audio must be compressed (with a codec like Dolby or DTS). You are unlikely to get more than 16 bits at 48 kHz, which every hardware supports.

That mixer control has 32 steps. I guess the second one corresponds to 17%.

Did you tell the old program to use /dev/(a)dsp1?

To map card 1, device 7 to (a)dsp1, use (a)dsp_map=0,7.

Both use the snd-hda-intel driver. You get adsp for device 1 by default. Aren't you using the adsp_map option?

You have to tell the old program to use /dev/(a)dsp1.

comment Understanding asoundrc and hdmi output
alsamixer shows only mixer controls; the digital output typcially has no volume control. Doesn't PulseAudio see the digital output?

What are the contents of /proc/asound/cards? What cards can be selected in alsamixer with F6?

Do both devices actually support 44.1 kHz?
