comment Make Live USB with dd
There is software for all OS's built specifically for making bootable USB drives, pendrivelinux host a index of all of them and the best ones to use, less then 15 minutes are you're set.

If that's the case, just google pendrivelinux, they have the best tools for making bootable USB.

comment Is my hard drive done for?
I've seen similar errors caused by usually one of 2 things, either the MBR on the drive has a error in which case use hex editor to rewrite it, or indeed your hard drive is done. If you do a lot of partitioning, as it seems you do, it may be the MBR. Have you tried using dd to wipe the disk?

If you want a linux distro, drop by pendrive linux and make your life a whole lot easier, as for other os's, as long as the hardware doesn't change, install the OS to a hard drive, or the flash drive if you want (depends on OS) if windows, hard drive, dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb (or whatever the drive is listed as) bs=1M

Honestly, right now I'm not sure, I've been at this for 14 hours, it's the gparted live disc so I assume it comes with it, we copied it with dd in ubuntu earlier but ran into a error with ubuntu and it only copied 2 of the 3 partitions.

Checked the information for the partitions, Warning, the device /dev/sdb2 doesn't exist. ntfsresize v2oo12.1.15ar.1 (libntfs-3g) error(2):failed to check '/dev/sdb2' mount state no such file or directory Probably /etc/mtab is missing. It's too risky to continue. You might try an another linux distro. Unable to read the contents of this file system! Because of this some operations may be unavailable. The cause might be a missing software package. The following list of software packages is required for ntfs file system support : ntfsprogs / ntfs-3g.

Hen, when you wake up, dd finished this time, but when I refreshed gparted to check, all the partitions are the right size, but it's registering them all as empty.

Should I have mentioned the OS on sda is vista? Found the wiki on dd and made me wonder, yes I'm new to dd.

THANK YOU, so I'm correct to assume the terminal in gparted will work the same, correct, you never responded to that question.

Correct me I'm wrong, I'm hoping that command works but I don't want t attempt anything without consulting those who know more about it first.
