Remove the tilde from the call, Applications is not in your home directory but in the root directory. However I would go for the alias defined in ~/.bashrc instead of the symlink.

That's very much dependent on the linux distribution, I don't know about Suse, though you can always download the sources and compile yourself.

Yup, is updated to the latest BIOS version. The problem is that all evidence that I have seen of T410 working under linux have been instances of either T410s with Optimus or T410 with Intel graphics, I have not seen any conclusive evidence of anyone, anywhere successfully running X on a T410 with the 3100M.

It is weird indeed, but if something as fundamental as being detected by the driver is caused by a hardware fault I really would expect to see a similar problem in Windows, of course with nVidia being the closed shop it is I don't really have any way to check, short of replacing the laptop...
