Okay! Now it seems my system likes the tidy script of yours more and the iptables -nvL gives output you have been expecting. But haven't solved problem of being pinged.

cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all gives output 1, iptables -X INPUT gives me error form your script: iptables invalid argument
