comment Outlook 2007: Gmail and POP3
Is your problem just outlook not being set to download message bodies for offline use automatically, or it refusing to let you do anything with imap folders when offline? I've configured outlook to do the former and can probably dig up the settings if needed. I've only had the latter happen once and have no idea what was different that day from my normal situation.

comment Transferring hard drive with bare install of XP between two computers?
Although it's not officially supported (and if botched will break your install) you can swap out a 1 processor HAL for a multi-processor HAL using tools that MS provides for driver developers. I've done it once after discovering my work laptop was imaged with the wrong HAL after I spend a few weeks installing and configuring all my software. forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t44294.html

You can run a dual core computer with a single core HAL. You won't get the benefit of the 2nd core though.

Then you should be good to go with the new power supply.

I can't do so now. your image host is blocked at work. I added a link to the 20 pin connector layout.

comment How much longer will the dsub port be supported in new hardware
As far as vga support disappearing is concerned Dell's latitude E series docking station has 2 DVI-D ports and a DisplayPort. The only way to use an analog monitor is to plug directly to the laptop itself. The laptop also has a DP for more modern displays.

comment How to declutter and organize the cables on and under my desk?
Don't go overboard though. Having about two feet of slack so you can yank your desktop forward and set it on its side to open it up without having to disconnect every single cable first is a major frustration saver. Even 1 foot of slack makes pulling forward enough to see what you're doing when plugging in new cables easy.

comment how can I tell if someone has been in my HP laptop?
IIRC except in Vista (SP0?) NTSF Last Access is disabled by default because of the performance hit it imposes on disk IO; so most likely that would only be useful for monitoring future attacks not for anything that has happened in the past.

comment Why does the heat production increase as the clockrate of a CPU increases?
AFAIK the speedstep values are equally conservative; running 24 hour burn tests at each multiplier/voltage stop would be prohibitively expensive so they set universal values that are good for 99.9...% of chips that pass whatever quick test they perform while binning the chips. I was commenting on the fact that in the real world the default settings will let you get a decent overclock at stock voltage, a decent undervolt at stock speeds, or operate with bad airflow in a hot room without failure.

"However, if you want to raise the frequency you also have to raise the voltage, because higher frequencies require higher operating voltages, so the voltage rises linearly with the frequency." While true in the abstract the default voltages on most CPUs are set conservatively so that you can often get a decent OC before having to boost the voltage. Also, in my experience with aggressive OCing, most of the total overvolt comes for the last few hundred mhz gained and that the response curve is not linear as it approaches the limit of stability.

comment Do I need to have 3 RAM DIMMs to use DDR3, or even be able to run a 3 channel CPU?
LGA1366 was designed to support the 6 core chips when they came out so it needed a wider memory bus. When the cheaper LGA1156 chips came out Intel stated (IIRC to Anandtech) that with DDR3-1333 two channels were enough to keep the CPU from bottle-necking in normal usage (vs memory benchmarks) but that the 3rd channel was needed to keep the 6 core chips running at full speed.

comment Why does the heat production increase as the clockrate of a CPU increases?
There is an element of truth to Gary's comment though. At this point transistor counts are high enough that for larger CPUs designers can put everything on die instead of having to pick and choose, and adding cache eventually runs into diminishing returns. The 10-20% gains with new architectures indicate that designers are still managing to tweak performance but there's probably not anything revolutionary left that could be implemented if there were more transistors available to spend.
