comment Pin two shortcuts to same application with different settings to taskbar
This may be due to the fact that the admin/non admin setting is being stored on the executable not the shortcut itself; so as far as windows is concerned the two shortcuts actually are the same thing despite their different names.

Doesn't work. The second shortcut silently fails to pin itself.

comment How can I give my wife emergency access to logins, passwords, etc.?
I agree with Torben; this looks more like a suitable option to store a master password than for general PW storage.

If you keep them at home, or anywhere multiple people have access, I'd suggest storing any hard copy passwords in a tamper evident manor so that you can potentially detect anyone snooping. A low tech solution would be inside an envelope with your signature along the seem. While it's possible for someone to forge your signature or open and reseal the envelope without their having done so being obvious it will shut down any casual snooping.

comment How can I fix a computer that is infested with malware and is extremely unresponsive?
@fgysin recovering arbitrary data from an infected computer and nuking from orbit are mutually incompatible activities because data files can carry an infection to the new computer (ex office macro viruses); even if, in the far too common case, where the user doesn't have a recent backup to restore from it's the closest you can come without massive protest.

comment Is there a filesystem that keeps only one copy of a file, and other copies are just references?
Why does ZFS need so much ram to implement deduplication? MS was able to make it work in WHSv1; on systems with 1GB or less ram. ex the HP EX470 was one of the flagship devices at launch and came with support for up to 4x2TB drives but only had 512MB ram.

comment How can you fake an email address?
@Manishearth I was thinking of despair.com's "Wailing List" (technically a marketing mail but I subscribe to it for the humor value). I'm at work so I can't copy what i get in outlook at home; but gmail shows it as ex The Wailing List wailinglist@despair.com via mail17.us2.mcsv.net both the mail# and us# subdomains vary from one message to the next. I several other subscriptions with similar issues from their 3rd party mailing services.

How is the spoofing supposed to improve the experience. The only impact I've encountered from it is negative. Outlook effectively won't let me whitelist the messages (for automatic image download) because each one comes from a different mailist@randomnumber.maillistcompany.com address.

comment How can I run legacy versions of IE (IE7/IE8) on Windows 8?
@jsalonen this is the same option that MS has provided for old versions of IE since Vista launched. The only major change since then has been that the more flexible activation in Vista/W7 allows you to recreate new test VMs from the same download when the old one expires while the XP/IE6 image needed redownloaded each time (Vista added an expires X days after first use option, XP only had expires on a specific date and MS needed to create new images to increment it.)

comment Expand C: with another Hard Drive?
Reviews I've seen said storage spaces had rather poor write performance for software raid. Unless/Until that's fixed I'd be leery about using it.

comment Can a DELL Latitude E6420 run 3 external monitors?
@Dccloth My dock has 3 video out ports (1 each: display port, DVI, and VGA); I can use all 3 of them and the laptop screen at the same time (2 on the Quadro, 2 on the IGP). If you have a model with only the IGP I suspect you're limited to 2 screens.

comment Can I use Visual Studio 2008,2010 and 2012 on Windows 8?
@JoshuaDrake if it was my computer, with what I considered an adequate amount of storage, I'd probably do so. With IT equipping computers with the smallest drives Dell will sell them and MSVPC running painfully slow on the C2D laptop I just retired it's yet to be a viable option for me at work.

comment Can I use Visual Studio 2008,2010 and 2012 on Windows 8?
Multi-targeting works for normal .net apps; but some other project types aren't supported going forward. VS2010 can't open windows phone 6.x projects. VS2012 can't open VS2010 installer projects. I still need to keep VS2003 around since multi-targeting never when back before the 2.0 framework; and one of the apps I'm on call to support if needed uses a 3rd party control library that won't play nice with anything newer than the 1.1 framework.

comment Looking at the screen in Windows 8 hurts my eyes
Agreed. For indoor use, under typical residential/office lighting conditions, a brightness of 80-100 cd/m^2 (nits) is generally ideal. To be usable in bright sunlight you need a level several times higher than that to avoid washing out; as a result laptop/tablet/phone screens need to have a max brightness level well above what you're using indoors. Most desktop LCD panels have backlights that are similarly powerful and which need to be turned down significantly to be comfortable. Reasons include bigger-is-better spec wars and making cheap screens look better in retail.
