comment Why my external drive turned in read only mode?
@ernie: Ok looks like actually was just a GPT issue, I reformatted everything, done a lot of tests, wrote a lot of things, read a lot of things. The HDD looks fine now.

Yea infact I'm re-writing the files I've written before but with a GPT table, I think it will solve the previous issue (I've tested the drive both in windows and linux, tested a lot of softwares). What I understood is that GPT can still create a lot of issues.

comment Why my external drive turned in read only mode?
@ernie: Looks like it was an issue with me that didn't use GPT (I used MBR), at least I've run tests for 3 days with HDD Scan, WD DataGuard and Bad-blocks (and HD Tune), bad-blocks discovered "a lot" of bad blocks (from 2tb and over) so I suppose it doesn't support gpt, same for hd tune. HD scan and wd dataguard didn't find any errors. I suppose gpt is not supported everywhere. Maybe bad-blocks work better if you have debian unstable.

Thanks a lot, I also agree with you, I'll let you know in some days, when tests will finish.

No while I was performing the test, I was on a Debian distro on my laptop, so a "normal" computer, connected through USB. I can't connect through sata because it's a boxed HDD (can't remove from it). I'm running some testing softwares, a lot of them stuck at some point so I imagine the drive it's actually faulty (the 4th in a month... I have no idea how to buy a working drive now).

comment DMA issue, keyboard about to die?
@techie007: I made a test without the keyboard and actually works without displaying the error. So I imagine is that. The strange part is that the keyboard keeps working.

I didn't test without keyboard but the o.s. was originally installed on the o.s. with the DMA issue, so at least all drivers for this system are installed (but yes, I've installed drivers for the other system too).

comment Backup Windows 7: Can I just copy files from one partition to another?
That software looks really good, I'm trying it.

This sounds good. If I have an o.s. crash I can also just reinstall linux over an hard drive and overwrite all data with rsynced data, I think it works in that way too.

comment Backup Windows 7: Can I just copy files from one partition to another?
Thanks a lot, just one question: what if I rsync the entire debian o.s. will be easy to just copy it back to a new drive to have it up and running? Dd is not an option for debian because there is my home directory in the same partition, and I want it to be synced ALWAYS (yea, not a weekly backup with dd, I would like to make daily backups, same for /etc and /opt directories).

No sorry, I use windows for gaming so VM can't replace it for obvious performance reasons :(

comment Partition suddenly became empty, any way to restore it?
Thanks a lot, at least I can try running tests for a week and see if something breaks.

Can't it happen also for a software issue? At least if there is a chance, I know I should make some tests before just "discarding" the HDD.

I was able to run all the commands, the problem was that the MFT was too corrupted for that. And I didn't hear any "failing sound" on the HDD.

@Ramhound: Any greater way to check if HDD is failing? SMART data looks okay and I didn't lost any file (I actually have just copied all of them on a new drive).

chkdsk /r D: didn't work, I'll try with fixboot and fixmbr, but as I stated the problem is with the MFT, not the MBR.

Thanks for suggestion, I'll test with chkdsk /r before it, anyway I'm quite sure I corrupted in some way the FS (I was downloading an avira rescue cd while shutting down), I'm quite sure the HDD it's fine, it's a chain of events that brought me to the FS corruption. Anyway I'll monitor it.

Thanks a lot, I run chkdsk /r D: and is performing a very long task, so I'll tell you the result once has finished.

Thanks a lot! I'll definitely follow your suggestions
