Not sure if this works in Gnome, but sometimes in linux, you can hold alt and right click. This will resize windows from anywhere in the window.

@Gilles just because SFTP (as a technology) is based on ssh, doesn't I can ssh onto any server I can SFTP to. Plenty of our clients use SFTP to transfer files to us, but none of them could ssh to the same server.

I have not, although that is not an option: using the mac as the client makes the keys screwy on the desktop (which is my primary machine) I will give that a try when I get a chance, though...
