comment How can I mount a sdcard and view it in /dev of a virtualbox guest
Yeah, slashes and/or caps don't seem to effect the end result at all

Got to give a +1 for the idea, but seems like it's not working for some reason. I'll have to dig into the failure unless you know why it's giving a server execution failure

comment How can I use Oracle's virtualbox listpartitions command on Windows 7
@gronostaj - Just tried it, same error. I ran the command on -rawdisk E: which came back as VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND meaning it was succesfully unmounted, then I ran the command with -rawdisk \\.\PhysicalDrive1 again and it was the COM server not running as above

@heavyd - Yeah, I've been using the GUI and a number of it's mapping fetchers with no issues for months now, I just decided that I wanted to use the command line tool to check the partitions and once I ran that as Admin I started seeing this error. The GUI still works.

@gronostaj - Yes, opening the command prompt as an admin fixed the other window opening issue, but that was really just a side effect. The overall problem of the command not working remains.

comment why can't I umount /home?
directly logged in as root. no FTP is running on the machine. Just issuing lsof prints a ton of crap, I suspect the problem is tied to the fact there are a number of logging mechanisms running (see my output of fuser in the question). But again... to kill them?

Yes, I am logged in as root, there is no one else on the system. If you can suggest how to use a "live distro" with Virtualbox I could give that a try.

Since it's running in a virtual box, the CD becomes problematic. You might also be able to do this if you log in as root. That way the /home partition is not needed. I am logged in as root, which it was my intent to avoid problem this way, I'm trying to figure out why that doesn't work.
