Clearing my map with setxkbmap us makes both of those configurations work, that was the trick! The xmodmap process seems much simpler than using xkbcomp; do you have any ideas on how I can achieve mapping some keys to left shift and others to right shift with it? Thanks again.

Nope, still got shift keys. # xmodmap -verbose -e "clear shift" ! 1: clear shift clear shift ! ! executing work queue ! clear shift
