comment Wiring my own RJ45 sockets - issues with a paticular outlet not negotiating at 1GB
dcdi.co.uk/product/302/network-cables/89/cat5e-stranded-utp/831/… is that not inivididual fine strands of wire twisted together? It's more flexible so they use this for patch cable. The cat5e cable with solid conductor i.e. solid core to electronics ppl. Am not correct? I used cat5e with solid cooper conductor for the the keystone jacks

comment Why doesn't my PC sync at gigabit ethernet speeds?
Actually I think the culprit might be a badly crimped RJ45. I have these connectors from maplin they have a cable guide with holes in it. For some reason everytime I try crimping the contacts slip and end up push away from the wire. So it looks like it's completely missed at least one of the 8 wires. what am I doing wrong? I must admit it's a cheapo crimper am using. I can't afford a proper professional one.

I have mine wired to the B standard i.e. w/orange,orange,whitegreen,blue, whiteblue, green, white brown, brown for the RJ45 plug. I'll check the socket now. It's labelled as to which pair goes where.

comment how does linux create it's device nodes in /dev
It turns out only selected device with google's vendor id and product number are capable of being recognised properly. You properly could get it working if you know the in and outs of the kernel. But I can't be bothered. Life too short for this.

comment iptables firewall rules not allowing ssh from lan to DMZ
but the forwarding chain is set to block any communication from the DMZ hence when i connect to ssh it's not allowed to establish the connection to the lan. I don't want the dmz being able to establish connections to the lan otherwise wants the point in the DMZ. Also I have tried it anyway since am an amateur but no doesn't work.

comment no websites loading using iptables nat
yeah sorry I gathered that. It wasn't clear on the tutorial. I was using ipmasq but by default it blocked everything and so I couldn't connect to my server. I removed all the rules to isolate which rules are blocking ssh. Also for some reason the ip forward wasn't sticking as well despite I added it sysconfig.

I'm using my adsl router to issue ip's to the workstations, does this matter? It does have nat disabled so it should be a standard router. At least that's what the manual said. The chains are flushed automatically within the startup scripts. I'm also found some errors in the /var/log/messages file. My kernel doesn't support ppp filtering and pppd can't determine remote ip.

I only have one rule thats listed when I execute iptables -L and thats's ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere. It's to allow connection from the rest of my lan into the server. My server has no monitor so I'm using ssh. When I was downloading using wget it couldn't connect. I also can't ping external ip's. But it works fine on the server.

comment Shielded ethernet cable and ethernet sockets earthing how to?
Yes the pc power cable provides earthing. The chassis of the pc is already grounded. Would my cable be grounded if I just connected to my lan card? Isn't that earthed? trouble is am not an electrician so am not really supposed to be messing with the earth block. I have already brought the shielded cable and can't return it. Was very expensive.

ok but then how is it properly shielded then eleven81? In other words, do I just wire the Ethernet jack then terminate it at the router using RJ45 plug then use a shielded patch cable to connect to my pc? My pc will be effectively be grounding the cable right?
