I found here that running the program as admin fixes the problem fczaja.blogspot.com/2011/07/… But I dont think the company has a policy to grant admin rights to everyone.

Sorry I was doing telnet but not to access the document remotely,but earlier I was doing gnome-open document.pdf,which now I think could have caused this. Thanks for your help.

Fine just wanted to know if I go ahead and install using this command "sudo gem install rails" it wont be any issue.

First of all thanks Andreas. One question after doing this will it be perfectly okay to install rails using "sudo gem install rails" command. What if I have installed Homebrew would it be better to install through Homebrew

Thanks Frank Thomas. So its possible to achieve this just by making appropriate changes into /etc/hosts file.
