Been fiddling with OSs, hardware and software since the late 1980s.

Jack of all trades, master of none.

I've always believed in Open Source and sharing knowledge.

The Stack Exchange sites now allow me to give back to the community by sharing my experience with others. Of course, I am still learning, too!

comment How can I permanently customize the Command Prompt in Windows 7?
I particularly liked this answer because it uses a command line command to complete it! I'm at the commandline, which is why I want to change the prompt, so I like commandline commands!

comment Does a laptop run hotter when running off the battery?
I'm going to take some more time to monitor the behaviour. I also suspect that because the laptop had just come out of hibernation, startup tasks were still running, causing more CPU load than normal. By the time I had connected the charger, these tasks may have completed. So it was pure coincidence that the fan cycles slowed down.

Then you should be able to do it using the answer provided by @mauro.stettler below. Log in to the admin backend of your router and set up port forwarding.

You need to tell us how your intranet is connected to the internet. Is it via a router, or does one of your machines have 2 network devices?

Ah! The classics! It'll be a sad day indeed when Microsoft users lose the command-line! A very useful tool is subst.

comment Is it possible to share the same “hard drive” partition with a dual-boot?
@Ash Same here.. I've been mounting NTFS partitions under Linux no problem. Well, almost - I find them much slower than native linux partitions, but I've never detected any data corruption.

Don't forget that Linux and Windows have different line-endings for text files. While many editors can automatically detect and handle this, Notepad (the Windows default) can not!

comment How to do a proper Linux server backup to store apps installed and configurations?
I forgot to mention that I maintain a run book as an OpenOffice document in an easily locatable location in my home directory. In there I document the scripts and tools that I customise, including command-line parameters, download URLs, etc. On other systems that I support, I use the same idea, and pass on the document to incoming sysadmins.

Does your company provide a proxy for corporate traffic? If so you specify the "private" sites not to use the proxy for...?

comment How are PCI/PCIe BARs configured to access memory on the device?
How do I get this question migrated to StackOverflow? Perhaps that's a better home for it. I don't want to just re-ask the same question there...

comment How are PCI/PCIe BARs configured to access memory on the device?
Thanks - but I am still not 100% sure I understand how the addressing is set up for a device that uses system RAM vs one with its own memory/storage (e.g. your bi-port RAM or FPGA examples). I've edited the question, asking for more clarification.

comment Clarification of the difference between PCI memory addressing and I/O addressing?
Ok, thanks. In a little while I'll ask another question regarding how the BARs are configured for system RAM vs device IO registers/RAM.

Thanks for your reply.. but could you confirm or contradict my understanding that memory addressing must map into existing RAM?

comment Do PCI / PCIe buses and devices always enumerate in the same order?
No response. Since cross posting is frowned upon, how do I migrate this to, for example, Stack Overflow?
