comment Sync a single folder with Dropbox (or similar service), without allowing other users access to entire Dropbox
Very clever! I like this solution. In fact, since I only want to have the MATLAB stuff on the lab computer I don't even need to have separate user accounts on the lab machine - just the one Dropbox account that has shared access to my MATLAB folder.

comment How do I find out how long a journey will take in heavy traffic on Google Maps?
I've added an edit above to show that this is still the case for me, even if I plot a London route... I'm using Chrome and Windows 8.

comment iTunes: Build (and auto-update) library from external folder
As mentioned above, I am aware of the 'Automatically Add to iTunes' folder, but this does not work for me, as my music library is located on external media

Perfect. Just what I'm looking for (until Yosemite is released, as @Daniel Beck suggests), and it's free now as well.

I used the first solution presented, and the problem is now solved.

comment Microsoft Word: Repeating a figure without renumbering
Thanks; I was hoping to retain the dynamic links, so that if I change a figure in the main text, its number updates at the end of the document. Unfortunately scientific journals don't like submissions in formats like LaTeX, which would make this a cinch!

comment Exclude slides from PowerPoint handout
This doesn't seem to be the case :/ Maybe I need to upgrade my version of PowerPoint. I'm on 2010 at the moment.

Thanks, but even if I play the custom show, the hidden slides are still hidden

comment Exclude slides from PowerPoint handout
Ah! Sorry, I completely glazed over the words 'Custom Show'. I didn't realise this was an option within PowerPoint (rather, I thought you were referring to a whole other PPT file). Looks like this is what I'm looking for. However, the 'hidden' slides remain hidden, even if I play the Custom Show. Do you know any way to get around this?

comment Exclude slides from PowerPoint handout
Thanks @Steve; this is close to what I'm looking for, but by hiding the slides, they won't show when I actually deliver the lecture, and the students would also have to manually select the 'no-print' option when creating their handouts...

comment Printing white images in PowerPoint handouts
Thanks very much. It looks as though this is a dead-end; I'd hoped there'd be a feature that would mean all-white images would be detected as such by PowerPoint and automatically inverted when printed. Maybe that's a lot to expect though! Never mind. Your offering is the best solution - simply don't use them!

comment Printing white images in PowerPoint handouts
Slide backgrounds are removed when printed (to save ink), but this is the source of the problem with regards to printing. I'm trying to avoid 'blocky' images by adding transparency.

No, my PowerPoint presentation will include all the slides; I just intend on excluding some of the slides from the handouts.

comment Sublime Text - keyboard shortcut binding not functioning
Many thanks @d_rail. Interestingly, I can't even call the console using ctrl+~ (the window menu says the shortcut is ctrl+` ; this doesn't work either). In any event, the console reports nothing when I press ctrl+shift+R with the sublime.log_commands(True) activated. Other common shortcuts, like ctrl+a, ctrl+c etc work and are reported in the console.
