comment What happens when an SSD wears out?
@SplinterReality In my anecdotal experience, the OS is most often the canary. Heavily-written files like swap-file or registry fail first, making the system unusable and prompting for drive repair. More rigorous SMART monitoring would be good. But they won't help SSDs in their current state. HDDs slowly "burn", SSDs spontaneously "explode". So, compared to SSDs, I'd call the HDD's degradation rather graceful.

@SplinterReality In my experience, SSDs have a single (and wery common) type of degradation: SSD is healthy, then it suddenly dies and 100% data is unrecoverably lost. On the other hand, HDDs have these modes: "1 bad sector" (common; 99.9% data recovery), "burnt controller" (easily replaced; 100% data recovery), "many bad sectors" (not common; ~50% data recovery) and "drive platters destroyed" (very rare; 0% recovery).

I meant "Can your proposed solution be used without having root anywhere?" What if I build sshpass from source and skip the package manager? I guess no.

At that time I couldn't run scp from the main machine because of some strange DNS-related problems. It only worked the other way. Thatnks for the suggestion. Does sshpass really require root?

@terdon The main machine runs FreeBSD 9 and the 100 servers run Ubuntu 12. P.S. I don't have root on any machine.

Sorry, haven't noticed your answer. My problem is that I didn't have root on any machine. The main machine had FreeBSD 9 and the 100 servers had Ubuntu 12.

My flash drive (and I guess most other flash drives) don't allow creating multiple partitions. diskpart will fail.

Why are you promoting the long abandoned unsupported proprietary commercial tool which always crashes on current HDDs?

How come this is not constructive? This is a "yes/no" question with a single definite answer - "no".
