+1 This is the best and correct answer. Sure, the others provide interesting information. But the OP's question "Could I follow the Ethernet cable through thousands of miles of fiber optics and eventually get to Amazon's server, ESPN's server, and every other site's server?" got one simple answer: YES.

ping accepts TLDs as well. Hence ping google.com should do the trick, in case you don't want to remember quadruple eight.
