comment Pretend file on disk exists for old program
Oh! yes this would solve the storage management part, and it's what I'll do if nothing else substantial turns up.

comment Pretend file on disk exists for old program
@DavidPostill what kind of detail? it's pretty specific already, but anyway: unzip datafile.zip -d %temp%\ && ye_old_fortran.exe %temp%\datafile.txt && del %temp%\datafile.txt

comment How can I “turn on wireless capability” in Windows 7?
Yup, this was my problem too. Vital keywords to add for other searchers: with WiFi Intel Manual Diagnostic tool "Software radio is OFF" means wireless is disabled in Windows Mobility Center, and "Hardware radio is OFF" means the laptop switch is off (button on the front/side or Fn-F2/F3/...)

comment Is there any 'sudo' command for Windows?
@Kiquenet that's the same approach as runas in other answers, with similar results and differences to elevate, isn't it?

comment in first line was incorrect, the command uses a share, doesn't create a new one

comment Import 71 and file permission in ArcGIS
@Gili your two sentences oppose each other. Which one is the typo? ;-) It's good to know that at least for some import71.exe does work on Win7; wish I understood why not for me.

comment Is there any benefit to plugging a USB 2.0 device into a USB 3.0 port?
This is actually the most correct answer, based on data not (just) theory. There is a measurable difference, but it's very unlikely to be perceptible until your operation is in the tens plus minutes range. Anandtech whipped out the tools and benchmarked reads and writes from/to an SSD to various combinations of USB2-in-3 ports, USB 3.0 Flash Drive Roundup. Best case? Shave 19 seconds off 228 seconds. (They also tested US3-in-2 if you're curious.)

comment Will crashplan offsite backup work if crashplan goes out of business?
Thanks for confirming restore works without CP central. If you ever come back here, please also answer the mirror side: will local backup work without CP infrastructure?

comment Will crashplan offsite backup work if crashplan goes out of business?
Great question. One way to test: setup 2 computers to backup to each other on a private network and disable or unplug any connection to external networks (e.g. internet). For exta verification a good idea to leave it in disconnected state for some time (weeks, months) to ensure it's not using cached CP central credentials or something. If someone does do this test, please let us know how it goes.

comment Crashplan: Disable cloud backup option permanently
A confusion arises because on a new install the Crashplan Central backup destination is shown as a green button, as the 30 day free trial is active, and can't be removed or disabled (turned grey). This makes it look as if you're going to back up to cloud no matter what. However if you go in to Settings >> Destinations then for each set there are check boxes to turn on/off Folders, Crashplan Central, Other Computers, etc.

comment What file format/database format does Picasa use?
Looks like interesting project, but even though it's on Sourceforge there's no code and no documentation, just a bare .exe with a one sentence overview. I don't run such things outside a sandbox with realtime process and file monitoring. I don't have one available right now and there's not enough incentive to make one. If you want this project to get used I suggest documentation, at the very least.
