comment How do I use GMail as my primary e-mail client?
Notifier only works for mail hyperlinks (e.g. mailto:). For using gmail as a client outside of hyperlinks, e.g. R-click > Send To > Mail recipient see related question superuser.com/questions/573568/…

comment Gmail as default Windows mail program (not same as `mailto:`)
It would b really great if someone who knows this stuff could inspect/audit the code and download .exe's for tvhgooglemapi to verify the program is legit and not just an email/password harvester or some such.

comment Gmail as default Windows mail program (not same as `mailto:`)
This is hopeful news. I looked at Tvhgooglemapi, and think the approach is sound. Unfortunately neither the .4 or .5beta version works on my computer (prompt for login, but nothing after). So +1 for info and a new lead, but not accepted (pending results of standard troubleshooting procedures).

comment Measure object in a photo, without a smartphone
I'm accepting this as the answer but not voting up. Why: a) the install program provokes an automatic reboot without warning or chance to abort or save open documents in other programs; b) before program will run it requires registration (email, name, company, etc., etc); c) images must be calibrated before they can be measured (which makes sense, but instructions for doing so are limited, and there's no library of known objects and size from which to choose for calibration).

comment Looking for freeware or opensource CAD that can read and edit .dwg
Yes the world certainly does move on harrymc:) The point of my comments are to document some of that movement and give current searchers something to work with. Thanks for the DraftSight pointer. Maybe it should be edited into the answer at the top of the list (to indicate currency).

DoubleCAD direct download link is downloads.imsidesign.com/ESD/DoubleCAD_XT_v5.exe, but still requires a Serial # and Activation Code, which are provided "free", in exchange for the aforementioned marketing profile and voluntary submission to spam list. However all this may be moot as the download link gives me constant "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading."

A9CAD's url is broken. The company website still works but is just a feed from a civil engineering news site. A9cad is still listed on a download page, however the release hasn't been updated since 2005. I wouldn't bother with it. HYCAD fares a little better, with it's latest release dated 2009. It doesn't have any dedicated web resources (home page, forums, etc.). DoubleCAD XT appears to be a more actively maintained product, listing Win7 and a release date in 2012. To get download link you need to withstand a barrage of marketing profile building questions.
