Open the file in question, change the line that says UTC=true to UTC=false, then reboot.

comment How to tar.gz everything but .jpg/gif/png/wmv/flv/tar.gz/zip?
Do you want to be a $ at the end there? Won't your egrep filter out jpg.txt?

comment Linux urldecode filename
The idea here is to turn '+'s into spaces directly, and turn % signs into '\x' escapes, and then let echo interpret the \x escapes using the '-e' option. Try running "echo -e 'hello\x20world'" to see this in action.

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx shows up twice in your interfaces file, but it should only appear once. You should have a separate address yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy for either you address or gateway (i.e., they can't have the same value). Is this true?

Are you saying that when /usr/bin/reset when invoked via Ctrl+A, it operates differently than when you run it by typing its name?

Ctrl-l isn't enough? What problem are you facing that causes you to need to run /usr/bin/reset?

comment How can I set system-wide defaults on Ubuntu 9.10?
Yes, good point, but note that /etc/skel only applies to new accounts, so pushing new items in there into existing accounts will need to be something that is managed manually.

(Encryption does protect against basic eavesdropping, but that's not what a MitM attack is all about)

"Encryption" alone doesn't protect against man in the middle attacks: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man-in-the-middle_attack

You can still use the old Alt-F2 trick in gnome-shell, but I agree that this is unsatisfactory... I'm sure when gnome-shell is more mature, this won't be a problem any more.

If you don't want to reinstall your OS, you can consider using a RamDisk (PAE-enabled of course) to make use of that extra 4GB.

comment How can I copy a file to a “vintage” mac?
I think (very) old macs used LocalTalk at the hardware layer for networking.
