comment Memory Swapping and OS freeze
Do you have any antivirus or other security software that hooks disk accesses? try to disable it. I never had an OS freeze (could still move the mouse and start up resource monitor) when swapping heavily in Windows 7. You can also try to lower the priority of your process with Process Explorer which should result in no slowdown of any other apps you are running, making debugging easier.

If you anticipate such a situation, you can keep the hardware connected, however. Note that some expensive server boards (like from Dell) sometimes have that feature built into their remote administration cards. So if you have the RAC configured you can use it on an "unprepared" server in production if your AntiVirus (e. g.) freezes your machine, and give the dump to your AV vendor and sue for compensation :)

I'd prefer to have it pre-connected. Technically it may work to connect a PCI (express) card during runtime, but as the bus is not specified for that, it may fry your hardware if you are unlucky. But there is no "software" preparation required (at least if you are running Windows and have a hibernation file configured).

if you are a driver developer for drivers without actual hardware (like antivirus), use a VM for developing your drivers. If you are developing drivers for actual hardware and it locks your machine up, there is actually hardware equipment that can (a) force a NMI interrupt (making all your drivers stop and dump memory to a special location on hard disk) or (b) dump RAM somewhere else, by pressing a button outside the PC. But I think for the average SuperUser user, this equipment is "too expensive".

comment CTRL+T hot key in Firefox missing suddenly
Does it work to open another tab in a new tab you opened by the menu, without a page loaded in there? Some pages (most notably Twitter, lately) try to register this hotkey for something they like better than opening new tabs...

comment Batch file. Variable in variable
@dbenham while I have to admit that the other solutions are easier (but probably did not work in NT4 which was the last OS where I had more contact with batch programming - later I always tried to use vbs or PoSH), I don't see why VAR10 can be of any problem - the delims splits %I% to before = and %J% to after =, and = cannot be in variable names AFAIK.

comment How to find source of memory leak in Windows 7?
As page faults is an accumulating counter, it does not tell much if you don't know how long the process has been running. (Page Fault Delta is better to see a current snapshot of what is swapping, and correlating page faults to uptime if you want to know if the machine has been out of RAM earlier)

I'd set up a few perfmon performance counters (length of processor queue, disk activity percentage, swap disk activity percentage, page faults, resident ram, virtual ram size, to name a few) and have a look how they change over time if you can see any discrepancies in these values - if you know what exactly goes up/down, monitor it in more detail.

To rule out bad drivers, have a look at Paged and Nonpaged Pool Sizes (for example in Process Explorer) - if they get too high, check PoolMon (but you'll probably need to debug your vm with a kernel debugger to get more details)
