comment CPU upgrade option for my Acer Aspire 1420p laptop
@Net4All: That has not been my experience, I've seen socketed CPUs in laptops, and I've even done CPU upgrades, though I'll admit it's been a year or more since I've had one apart.

comment What is the fastest way to securely overwrite an old hard drive?
@Ivo: DBAN boots from removable media and can wipe all the sectors on the OS drive, not just the free space.

@Rookie: If you're just wiping the free space on an NTFS partition, you're not overwriting disk sectors used by NTFS itself. Possibly some metadata remains behind and can be recovered, even if the file contents have been overwritten. If you select 'Entire Drive' instead of 'Free Space Only', that should get everything. Not sure that will work on your OS / C: drive though.

Keep in mind that wiping only the free space (even if you've removed all the files) could leave some crumbs behind in the filesystem structures.

@Rookie: DBAN only wipes drives you select (though I think there is a wipe all option). I think it prompts you for confirmation, too.
