comment In UDF, what's the difference between a volume identifier, volume set identifier, logical volume identifier, and file set identifier?
Yes, I've read the man page and those sections of the standards (after all, I linked to them in my question)... The question is what are those fields for, not how to set them.

comment How do I tell if my Memory is ECC or Non-ECC?
Oddly, checking one of my known-ECC boxes (and I'm sure it works, as I've gotten single-bit notices before) data width is 72, total is 64—clearly, they're labeled backwards.

comment Conditional hibernate with systemd in Linux
BTW, you might want to try asking on Unix & Linux If you don't get an answer here. Best way would be probably be flag your own question, reason other, and ask for it to be moved.

comment Inconsistencies on MD5 checksums
A better example might be to just show the output of echo "word" -n. Pretty clear why its failing when you see that!

comment Can I modify the SMART value of Raw Read Error Rate Worst Value to be greater than 1?
@JohnPaul I'd tell you if I knew... But I don't, and couldn't even Google up a reference to the Windows installer having that behavior, much less how to bypass it. So that's why I suggest a separate question.

@JohnPaul sounds like you need to ask a question about how to bypass that check in the Windows installer.

comment Can I modify the SMART value of Raw Read Error Rate Worst Value to be greater than 1?
Minor nitpick: many failures are actually of the control electronics, which wouldn't require opening the drive to repair, as the board is mounted to the bottom of the drive. But of course, repairing that isn't practical either.

comment Ruined Surface Pro's USB port
Have you tried completely powering down the Surface and leaving it off for a few minutes? If you're really lucky, Microsoft protected the USB ports with a polyfuse, and you've just tripped it. That should reset it.

@MichaelKjörling that's a good point, I'll edit to make it clear it differs from GPG in that way.

@StéphaneChazelas The spam firewalls I've used before act as an SMTP relay, e.g., you put them in your MX records, and they forward on the filtered email. So they'd be the endpoint for STARTTLS.
