comment Ubuntu Virtual Machine does not detect partitions/volumes
Why would you want to create a /dev/sda4 Linux LVM partition given that there it is a /dev/sda4 Linux LVM partition?

If you are using your own build, you might consider trying building another significant version...

What have you tried? Did you try finding in man ssh that there exists a verbose mode?

comment Viable virtualization solution for home networks
Maybe not now, three years ago this was clearly a niche case for the gratis version of XenServer, but am not sure about the multiple monitor requirement. If you can afford releasing a high end computer in your home, you can evaluate this solution.

comment script or freeware application that will alert/email me when a folder/directory reaches a certain size
You can use cygwin and some lines of UNIX scripting for that using du and tar. But I'm missing the step that would pass from .tar.gz to .iso, so I can not state an answer.

comment Does a windows 8 PC REALLY need maintenance every few months by a tech expert?
Nowadays... nope (arguably never were). I ran the unholy Windows 6 for more than four years without paid maintenance nor "antivira software". I turned to GNU/Linux just to get a performance boost, but the system was sane. Bloated with updates, but healthy.

Souns a bit hardware specific. Do you want arrow keys going downside up, or is LED lighting enough?

I will try to (and you might do it too) look at the current Linux 3.13 particular fork implementation and try to give an example [obviously] not applicable to other kernels. Meanwhile let us hope a specific OS technician enlightens us about the general techniques.

Do you need an operating system that creates child processes next to its parents whenever possible?

Read your whole fork manpage, I bet you won't find that the child is created in such a continuous memory space. So, what then?
