comment Is typing %^ into cmd.exe a Windows easter egg?
They got rid of all future easter eggs to increase trustworthiness? How do they suppose that works out?

comment How to increase mouse sensitivity beyond limits in Windows Regedit?
How is MouseSpeed a multiplier when you gain speed by increasing it up to 2, but by setting the other two to 0?

comment IIS 7 fails to install on Windows 7, despite attempts at Windows Fix It tool, removal/reinstallation of .NET 3.5, etc
@magicandre1981 I guess that was it. I tried a few things to get rid of it and partially went by what people were saying at sevenforums.com/system-security/290614-sfc-warning.html, but I think the two that probably worked were ESETSirefefCleaner and RogueKiller - at least RogueKiller. After that, scannow /verifyonly acted like everything was fine, and I was able to install IIS. You brought up CBS and sfc /scannow, so go ahead and post it all as an answer.

... "\SystemRoot\WinSxS\amd64_security-malware-windows-defender-events_31bf3856ad36‌4e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_118cf1dcd54a3dea\MpEvMsg.dll". I looked it up, and apparently ZeroAccess somehow messes with a link or something (?) to that dll and redirects it to another folder. sfc /verifyfile doesn't work too well with that file, and when I access its properties, Windows suddenly starts thinking it's a shortcut with target \Windows\system32\config. I think this issue has been on the computer for a while and has survived Kaspersky and McAfee, so I'm hunting for a way to fix it.

@magicandre1981 Sorry it took me a little while. Looks like ZeroAccess is involved. sfc /scannow kept failing somewhere close to 65%, other Windows Updates would either succeed or fail, depending on which they were, chkdsk didn't help very much, etc. Today though I tried sfc /verifyonly, and it came back saying that stuff was corrupted. I looked in the CBS log, and there were four Error log lines grouped right there together, with the first one saying things like (F) STATUS_FILE_IS_A_DIRECTORY and ...

Try using a hex editor.

comment When using Japanese IME and pressing Ctrl + Caps Lock, how do you make it toggle to half-width alphanumeric, not full-width?
No, dude, I've upvoted your answer. If you tried it and it worked, then it's a good answer. There was just something different going on on my particular machine.

It didn't work, unfortunately. Thanks though.

comment How can you go from IE 8.0.7600.16385 to IE 8.0.7601.17514 on Windows 7?
Thanks. I've had to sidetrack on a different subset of the issue for now, but I'll look a little more into your answer when I get a chance.

I know what you're saying, but we're having to integrate a bunch of different things together, and a lot of this is over a LAN. Since this computer is used for very specific reasons over that LAN, we're trying to alter it as little as possible. If that version of IE could be pinpointed to one particular Windows update though, we probably wouldn't have to get special permission or anything.

comment How can I completely and surgically block any communication between adobe.com and my computer?
Thanks, the hosts file thing worked. I couldn't just pull the cord out though, because I needed to connect to another computer still.

comment What does “@path\” mean on the command line?
Thanks. The reason I was wanting to get rid of them is that the space that folder takes up can get pretty ridiculous over a period of time.
