I'm YAUG (Yet Another UNIX Guy) I question authority but respect it where it is due I am an EE with Bachelors and Masters degrees but in IT field by choice for the last 20+ years. HPUX was my first love but nowadays it is Linux, more than anything else.

comment How much space (GB) occupied by transmitting video?
you are totally ignoring the type of video coming thru (encoding-wise) and any compression to this stream done by the networking gear. 26.5 Mbps doesn't necessarily mean adding 26.5 M-bits of data appended to the end of the stored file every second. As you said, there is not enough data to answer this question assuredly. Your approximation is as good as you can get, but if I were you, i wouldn't write my books on that.

comment I/O fails to nfs mount (occasionally) - server timed out
I am assuming these two are not connected using a cross-over cable but through some network switches and routers. I'd ask the network admins to put a sniffer to both sides of this connection and determine when and where this time out problem starts and what leads to that. Sounds too much like a networking gear not liking the the large amounts of data passing thru and dropping the connection to me.

comment Counting duplicates lines from a stream
have you tried and saw that it didn't work for you or you are just assuming it will not work ?? The creation of the temporary file is the same thing as piping the output of your first command to the second command as its input. If you haven't tried, just try it. If you tried, what prob lem did you encounter ?
