comment Fix bad blocks on Mac hard disk
@Spiff - you are correct, I made an error trying to avoid lengthy explanation of how block's data and CRC fields work together to ensure data integrity, and thus requiring a write operation to check if its a physical block problem or just corrupted CRC (which is fixable). Actually, I am not aware of any modern HDDs performing remap on read...

Sorry, that wasn't clear before the edit. Have you had a look at superuser.com/questions/96796/… ?

Headphones exist with stereo-to-5.1 converters; those converters usually come as a separate box between 3.5 plug and the headphones. Maybe those will work for you. For basic duplication, there are 3.5mm splitters with 1 male 3.5 plug and 2 female 3.5 sockets. That should give you 4 channels with 1 splitter, and 6 channels with 2 splitters :)

comment How to control the time before Windows 7 wakes from standby and hibernates?
Have you tried configuring "Standby after" and "Hibernate after" in Control Panel -> Power management? I'm 75% sure the times you set there control the behaviour of your laptop. Other 20% go for the battery charge-based actions (which you can also configure). Remaining 5% cover all other possibilities.

comment Buying Video Card for 1600x900 monitor?
I'll second TheDudeAbides, most video cards do that - including integrated video solutions from Intel, ATI and nVidia. However, you will often need to install a card-specific driver from the manufacturer instead of a generic Microsoft-provided video driver.

Modern HDDs remap bad blocks automatically upon failed read operations. The only problem is losing data in that block, which may render a file unreadable/broken, or maybe introduce an error into FS - for that, use your system's checkdisk/fsck (I'm not that familiar with Macs). [Sometimes bad blocks are the result of power loss, and not the hardware problem; this is fixable, but a different topic.]

comment How to know the corresponding command line cmd for the UI click?
For menu (in Gnome), there's a menu editor to peek at the commands run at a click. Just right-click and select 'Edit menu', then navigate to the item and check its command-line.

a wild idea, but... what is the wattage of your PSU?

Have you modified any RAM settings in the BIOS? At least for the Asus P6T it states support only up to 1333MHz DDR3 w/o OC, and if you set it to more it might refuse seeing all RAM modules. Also, P6T is listed as a 6-DIMM MB: have you followed the color codes for triple-channel? (just to be sure, I believe you did)

comment Inverse multiplexing to speed up file transfer
If a torrent client creates multiple TCP connections with a single peer, then this would solve OP's problem. However, I do not know if torrent clients do really create multiple TCP connections with single peers.

@rob: where did you get that "FTP uses multiple connections for file transfers" from? Some clients do allow multiple streams for downloading from FTP, but there is definitely no FTP client/server combo allowing multiple streams for uploading to FTP.

That is weird - mine is an integrated HD 3300, using fglrx. Have you built/installed fglrx-kernel modules? I'm on Debian, so I believe something like module-assistant for building kernel modules also exists on Ubuntu. The command is (after entering root shell with sudo -s) m-a update && m-a prepare ; m-a a-i fglrx, then reboot.

my graphics card's (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650) performance on Ubuntu is not very good - actually, it is perfectly possible to make graphic card in Linux perform as good (or even better) as in Windows. However, that does involve a lot of time and some efforts. I was indeed surprised to see FF3/Win scroll some web-pages much slower than FF3/Linux on the same PC.
