comment unable to open a file in gedit from the terminal when I login as root
as long as you don't disable the access by invoking xhost - from normal user prompt and don't restart, it should still work

The use of the hyphen "-" forces the new shell connection to run with adjustment of variables environment and all the default settings according to user preferences.

comment Network interface does not become active although onboot enabled, Linux
It's not a hack. For my system, whenever I need some script to be included on boot, I enable execute bit on the file and add a line to my rc.local file which looks something like this if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.vnstat ]; then /etc/rc.d/rc.vnstat start fi. That line ensures the script is included at boot. By looking at the file permission you included, execute is not set for any user so the first thing you should try is chmod +x and reboot the system.

you need to chmod +x /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 so it can be enabled at boot. I could be wrong with the file name thou .. never used Fedora 15

comment Networking of two computers over wifi+ethernet
It looks to me that the wifi network block is separate from the wired connection network block. In any case scenario, your schools net admins wouldn't want wifi users to be in the same brodcast range as the wired connection because that would lead to security issue. So, its unlikely that you will be able to access ssh from you laptop if you don't have access to net filters ..etc. If you're trying to share files between ur pc's, I suggest you use different service from the web or directly connect you wired connection to a wifi-enabled router so you can become the admin to ur dorm/room
