comment Can a script open a GUI application, execute several “clicks” and navigate to a particular screen?
As Tiramisu has noted, AutoIt should be able to do pretty much all that you require. Google Earth also has it's own API (Application Programming Interface) that could also be leveraged. AutoIT being the easier option for someone without a programming background.

comment I restricted my own access to a partition on my computer. How do I get access again?
Check this link for setting permissions. Once you've taken ownership you should be able to set the permissions for your user account. Link: --> eightforums.com/tutorials/…

comment Can't read from the source file or disk
if you run chkdsk in read only mode (without parameters other than the drive letter) it will just report any issues found. It won't attempt to fix any errors unless you include parameters such as /f. Run chkdsk without a drive letter will give you the options available for the tool. Power save mode would cause a problem if your power profile disables external devices.

comment Is it possible to detect that data from notepad is copied or pasted into it technically
The application would need to be coded to track whether the data is typed or pasted. A more sophisticated application such as a word processor is more likely to care about how text was entered into it and is more likely to have this type of functionality. Tracking the clipboard would probably yield a more useful result depending on what you were trying to achieve. Many browsers support the onPaste event in the DOM but I don't believe notepad has a similar object model that is exposed via an API.

comment Hard drive failed, suspected filesystem corruption, still cannot salvage any data from harddrive
You could try disk recoup or file scavenger from quetek. It's not free but you can try them first with limited functionality and then if it looks like a good chance of recovery you could then decide if you want to buy it to use the full recovery functions.

comment Windows Explorer - How can an large file have a zero “Size on disk” value? What does it mean
I note in your screenshot that your path is reporting D:\DFSRoots Is that just a coincidental name or are you using DFS (Distributed File System)? With DFS the file may not necessary live locally on the server you are on but will reside wherever the DFS has been set up and the partner set up in the DFS relationship. As a result, the physical size on disk would be 0 bytes.

comment CMD doesn't update environment variables even when restarting the OS
If you type the full path to where you are expecting the command(s) to be do they execute? e.g if you expect JAVA_HOME to contain the path to the path to the javac executable can you run C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_60\bin\javac and have it execute. If so, that validates the full path. Then try %JAVA_HOME%\bin\javac and see if that executes as expected - that will validate that the path is correct via the environment variable. Whenever I set new environment variables for applications I test via full path then the mapping via environment variable.

Also check that your BIOS is referencing the correct drive. I've seen the occasional issue where the BIOS is trying to boot off a non-bootable drive.
