comment Commuting with a laptop that is powered on
I lost one laptop to overheating by leaving it to re-encode a videofile while in a laptop bag. The passively cooled GPU literally burned.

comment How does limiting a laptop battery's full charge to less than 100% extend its battery life?
@sidran32 - yes that's the problem. It charges to 100%, harger turns off, the battery drops to 99% it turns on at max voltage, etc etc.

@Paperlantern - synergy is exactly what I was looking for. I even remember using this on Linux but I thought it was part of X, I never knew it was an app. ps if you wan't to put this as an answer so I can accept it

Well the picture is more like; piles of servers covering the floor with monitors and the occasional keyb/mouse balanced on top of them with a mess of cables covering everything - but yes!

comment truecrypt drive encryption NTFS compression
The compression is INSIDE the encrypted container. It will compress identically to any other data, the compressed (ie. essentially random) data is then encrypted

- posted on superuser but didn't get any views. Since it's a work machine I thought I'd try serverfault

comment Windows System image to remove raid
Yes so long as I change it back before I reboot ! I did check it on the imaged copy but I guess i was reading a temp rescue registry hive rather than the one in the image.

I can't enable AHCI before I image the drive because the boot drive is part of the raid set. The restored image has the MSAHCI set in the registry, but as you said - no driver. Looks like it's re-install time!

comment How to measure the health condition of SSD?
In general it's not worth worrying about on modern drives with wear levelling and normal usage. The SMART interface may give you info on the specific device

comment Hidden Files on Flash Drive
A USB drive can identify itself as a HID (human interface device) at which point the computer accepts keyboard codes from it as if you were typing.

comment Change scheduled windows7 backup setting
Thanks, you have to navigate to "task scheduler lib->windows->windows backup", it isn't listed in the "running tasks" and have to start the task scheduler as admin to see it.

@soandos - that's the point - how? There is a 'change settings' link but it just prompts you to create a new backup

comment Compress and then encrypt, or vice-versa?
@Olli - not necessarily if the compression scheme adds known text. In the worst case imagine if it put a known 512byte header on the front of the data and you were using a block mode encryption.
