comment Laptop doesn't boot up (not even to bios settings) and has corrupted partition table
Ah ok and a missing part always will show some kind of error or will beep. So if I remove everything and then boot up the laptop while nothing is connected, it should beep/show an error if the motherboard isn't broken. Is this correct?

Or to phrase it differently - can I be sure that it wasn't my fault while trying to upgrade ubuntu? If it is a hardware defect, I have to send it back in. It then isn't that important, which hardware is defect. But if I myself destroyed it and could repair it somehow, I want to try that first.

I didn't remove everything, because it's difficult to remove some parts - I would have to loosen more screws than I want to, because some parts are connected to the back side of the motherboard and I only opened the case but didn't remove the motherboard. So I removed ram, but most other parts are still connected. When booting the laptop, there were no "no ram beeps". Can I assume that the motherboard is broken or do I have to remove all other parts before being sure?

Thank you all for your help. Looks like I have to send it to the manufacturer for repairing it :(

@CharlieRB: Unfortunatelly I don't have an external monitor I could check it with. But since it doesn't make a difference whether I have ram plugged in or not (see comment above), I'd say it isn't a monitor issue.

When I remove the RAM and run the laptop without RAM, this doesn't make any difference. No beeps, just a black screen and a running cd drive. Also here, the CPU fan isn't running.

@BonGart I don't want to risk the ram, etc. of the second laptop. If the motherboard is defect, it could destroy them when I insert them into the defect laptop, correct?
