comment Can the drives in a RAID 1 array be rotated?
The other line of thought on reads is to always read off of one drive so that you only shorten one drive's lifetime - if it weren't an issue Raid 0+1 & 1+0 wouldn't exist. :) How much reads are actually going to shorten a drive's life are up for debate, but there is a difference.

If you can find 91% or 99% isopropyl it's better than 70%. That 30% water can take a while to dry.

comment I don't have a free PCI / PCI-e slot, can it be worked around?
These won't work - you need at least one PCI/PCIe bus in any form (which includes ExpressCard) and the OP said they did not have that in their nettop.

comment Removal of hard drive on an old Compaq Deskpro
As I stated in my answer - DBAN it first before you physically destroy it. DBAN does not need a network connection to run once you write the image to the CD/USB/Floppy - you boot your computer off that SD.

comment Ubuntu 10.4 automatic wireless connection
It might be asking you for the password to your default keyring. Changing your password will not change the keyring password, especially if you did it with the passwd utility as root (such as if you forgot it). See below answer.
