comment sudo keeps asking me for my password in fish shell
Considering this is the "Ubuntu way" for getting a rootshell, I figured it was a neat work around the problem. Every command is still logged.

comment Can you charge any device with Mini-B USB receptacle from any charger with Mini-B USB plug?
In addition: you can short the data pins (2 & 3) to indicate you're a charger and then the device can draw 500mA without issue.

comment Cannot login in graphical mode - Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
My father's machine had this problem but it was from an upgrade from 8.04 - kdm solved the issue.

Well that's certainly good - nothing hardware related. Looks like the other answer's the cause.

comment Linux distribution with preference for permissive licenses
LGPL is fairly easy to code for - just allow users to replace the library and you're done.

The status of the code that links against THAT library is fairly straightforward - if you use the library in its unmodified form, you can use it as public domain. With the inclusion of that GPL/LGPL code, the entire library is considered to be under GPL/LGPL. There's no question. Debian source packages package the original library and Debian's modifications in two separate archives in the source package. You can go back to the unmodified version but you'll have to distribute that yourself (it's public domain).

comment How do I disable the iSight camera on Mac OS 10.6?
No, you're not - but the Mac doesn't have a hardware switch to control the camera. Most people go with a flap or cover.

I think it's called gnokii, but I'm not sure it's maintained anymore.

comment How is encryption handled when different email clients send emails securely?
In my specific case, my pubkey is on keyserver.ubuntu.com and has a gmail address listed on it. There's nothing that says you have to store the key on the mailserver.

comment How do I disable the iSight camera on Mac OS 10.6?
Aside: and this is why I love my XO-1. The camera and microphone LEDs are hard-wired to light when the camera/mic are sampling. And since they are tested on boot, I'd know if someone disconnected them. :)

Can you be sure that the software you remove isn't reinstalled through an update? If you're paranoid enough to ask about how to disable the camera for all applications, making the camera return meaningless input is just about as good.

comment Does this router contain a modem?
My cable provider charges $5 USD/month 'rental fee' for a modem. That means buying my own is cheaper if the modem lasts 15 months. At any rate, this is a DSL question, not a cablemodem question...so...

My cable company provides 'dumb' ones if you don't get their VOIP package - but I always buy my own modems.

comment Does this router contain a modem?
In contrast, most cablemodems available for sale in my area are integrated modem/routers...which means it's a pain to get custom f/w on 'em.

comment How to get the real IP address of someone using a proxy?
My guess? They probably ask the host system for their IP or possibly ping the system on its connection. Not very useful when the "real IP" reported is 192.168.1.201 or something.

comment Ubuntu 10.10 network card detection problem
Race condition: two things are trying to affect the system at the same time, and it's a race to see which one wins. One of the common symptoms is that the problem is intermittent.

@jake: You're already going to have that problem - the old drive is PATA :)

comment Can the drives in a RAID 1 array be rotated?
The other line of thought on reads is to always read off of one drive so that you only shorten one drive's lifetime - if it weren't an issue Raid 0+1 & 1+0 wouldn't exist. :) How much reads are actually going to shorten a drive's life are up for debate, but there is a difference.
