comment Detect if e-mail has been read by the recipient?
Also known as "PattyMail" after HP tried to use these to figure out who on their board was leaking information to the press.

comment I don't have a free PCI / PCI-e slot, can it be worked around?
These won't work - you need at least one PCI/PCIe bus in any form (which includes ExpressCard) and the OP said they did not have that in their nettop.

comment Removal of hard drive on an old Compaq Deskpro
As I stated in my answer - DBAN it first before you physically destroy it. DBAN does not need a network connection to run once you write the image to the CD/USB/Floppy - you boot your computer off that SD.

It might be asking you for the password to your default keyring. Changing your password will not change the keyring password, especially if you did it with the passwd utility as root (such as if you forgot it). See below answer.

comment Which Linux Mint flavor is most suited for a 2.6Ghz + 500MB RAM computer?
I'd start with Fluxbox, IMO, then move to XFCE, then FVWM - but I listed a bunch in case you are not happy with one. The reason there are so many WMs is because everyone has different needs & tastes.

Xubuntu is a little heavier than GNOME in the later versions. It's sort of a problem. :(

Ubuntu will run comfortably on 768MiB of RAM - that's how much I'm using. 2GB is plenty

This is really bad if there's a ground loop. I'm surprised you didn't fry something.

I would verify your backups are good - read errors mean that you could be backing up bad data.

I'm unable to speak to stock Linksys firmware, sorry. There's a reason why 3rd party firmwares are popular.

comment How can I get suspend or hibernate to work on my Acer Aspire 7551 laptop with Ubuntu 10.04?
Caveat: with 10.04 you will need to enable Ctrl-Alt-Backspace as a shortcut to kill the X server.
