Aaaand this is a massive known issue. I'll update here if I find something that reliably fixes :-/

comment What do I have to index in order to search the Windows Control Panel (in Win10)?
I get one folder that has "mouse" in the name, then "Store" results, then "Web" results. No control panel / settings. It does now say "We're getting search ready..." but the Indexing Options control panel says "Indexing Complete". Is my search hosed?

comment Use touchpad while “typing”?
Two observations: one, Synaptics really needs to stop moving every. single. setting. whenever they make a minor-version increment in the driver software. Two, this needs to be managed by either the vendor software or the Windows control panel -- it's a terrible idea to have conflicting settings in both places!

comment How to enable Synaptics Touchpad While Typing (without disabling palmcheck)?
Thank you zeel, this has been bugging me for ages -- when you need to hold a key + click for an action, I could not get it to work for the life of me. The strange thing is, with the setting disabled, holding a key while trying to move the trackpad results in some, stuttery movement. Better than nothing, I guess?

comment Can I show the “All Apps” section of the Metro Start screen using the keyboard?
This does get the job done, though it seems like there should be a simpler way. <kbd>PgDn</kbd> moves the selection cursor between "groups" in the main Start screen, rather than changing to the All Apps screen as I'd expect, for example. If there's not a single-key way to do this, I'll accept your answer, but it seems like an oversight.

comment Setup Ubuntu L2TP VPN server and authenticate users with certificates
Did you ever get an answer to this? From this writeup and others I've seen, the most common setup involves 3 (!!!) passwords, one each for IPSec, L2TP, and PPPD. As that links shows, one of the 3 (IPSec) can be replaced with per-user certs, using racoon. Ideally I'd like to get the number of passwords down to zero :-/

comment How can I connect 2 windows 8 machines with WiFi Direct?
I think the thing that is always missing from discussions of WiFi Direct is that it's not a product (like say Windows File Sharing), it's a standard (like say Samba). It took me ages to understand this. You can find tons of products that implement Samba (and likewise a few that implement WiFi Direct) but there's not going to be a button called "WiFi Direct" in Windows, just like there's no button labeled "Samba". If you get WiFi Direct support, it will come from a product. I haven't found one that works in Windows yet.

It looks like this experimental feature was dropped at some point.
