comment Is too big cache a bad idea?
Just don't get the larger cache instead of more general improvements such as more RAM or faster HDD.

comment USB flash drive keeps activating 'write protection' by itself. Disarms after unsafe removal
First question: did this drive EVER work correctly? Or has it always had issues? Because if it's always had issues, I'd say it's defective and/or fake. Otherwise, try re-formatting it, then try to scan again. If it still fails, throw it out, it's gone bad.

@Somebody - Ahh, I see. Too bad, but it may be that they simply DON'T work. Good luck on getting something else to go.

@Somebody - The next thing I'd try is opening up a terminal program and starting with the settings where you got junk, and then walk through all the baud rates it offers and see what you find.

@Somebody - wait, you mean the manufacturer has to ask the guys who sell it for them how the damn thing works? Are you in a position where you can refuse to work with this equipment? Because this doesn't sound like a good start.

comment Why Isn't my Version of Windows 7 OS Compatible With the Same Version of the Installation CD?
@VoidKing - was the tower ORIGINALLY SP1 or was it plain Win 7, then upgraded to SP1? I'm thinking that if it was originally plain Win 7, the DVD might notice the difference and refuse on that basis.

What have you tried? And can you tell if the scale is sending anything at all? Did you try opening up a terminal program (I'm fond of RealTerm, but there are many) and see if you see anything from the scale?

comment Is it possible to convert .vdi or .vhd into OS cloning images?
I don't have a full answer here, but some hints: for virtualbox files, you can use the vboxmanage program with the clonehd option to convert a VDI or whatever to a raw data file, which perhaps you can then figure out how to convert into an Acronis image.

comment Is there a disadvantage to not using text file extensions?
For data files, it often matters (see Basile's answer). For executables, I rarely see anyone use file extensions (they just make the name longer to type).

comment Are USB hard disks less reliable for backups?
@tamy - EVERY interface is vulnerable to some issues. NOTHING is perfect. You could get a defective drive. You could have a solar flare while doing backups. If the backups are that important, you need to CHECK them by reading after writing. Your co-worker is getting worked up about one unusual failure he saw once upon a time, and potentially ignoring other problems and the appropriate way to deal with them. You have to evaluate a proposed backup system in total, INCLUDING what happens when hardware fails.

comment Are USB hard disks less reliable for backups?
@tamy - Yes, broken hardware can produce weird and unfortunate effects. That's why a lot of backup software goes back and re-reads what it's written to make sure it's really there. This (rather unusual) failure is reason to get new backup software, but not to discount USB hard disks.

comment Why very few modern motherboards are equipped with TPM?
And as to MS requiring it for Win 9: I doubt it. They may well require it for some features (drive encryption), but given the large number of perfectly good motherboards that wouldn't be able to run Win9, I don't think they'll be able to afford to require it for the OS as a whole.

comment If I cancel my Onedrive subscription, will the local files remain intact?
If you are worried, then copy them off to other media first. That way, even if something goes wrong, you won't lose anything.

comment Windows does not recognize my monitor any more
Is there a reason you don't want to use the HDMI cable? I'd take a guess and say that the DVI port on the monitor is toast for some reason. If the HDMI works, just use that. If the video card only outputs DVI, consider a DVI->HDMI adapter. I have seen the DVI port crap out on a monitor before, without apparent provocation, so this isn't entirely without precedent.
